Master Plan for the Maitreya Institute in Emst, Veluwe Gelderland

The Dutch Maitreya Institute has as its main goal to maintain the Buddhist Mahayana tradition as preserved up till now by Tibetan Buddhists and is, since the Chinese invasion in Tibet, at hazard to become extinct. When the institute bought a piece of land in Emst, they asked Architects’ Studio Enno Wiersma to be their architect for future developments. In the beautiful forest area a youth hostel is located with an existing house with a thatched roof.

The first project to be realized was the housing for monks and, as the design is very modular, it can be developed unit after unit. The housing project is designed as adobe structures, earth houses with wood frames. This is an important aspect for the development of the real estate for the institute. The expenses of material are very cheap and high costs of labor (with the exclusion of high tech solutions) can be overcome by creating a low cost labor force.
A thatched roof is designed with a large overhang to protect the exposed mud walls against the rain. The windows in the walls come outward with a 45° angle and provide enough daylight in the rooms with the additional roof lights. Roof lights also cover the center of the roof, where four units are grouped around a central fifth one with staircase.

The future guest housing with Gompa can be developed in the same fashion, unit after unit, replacing gradually the existing accommodation. Meanwhile the builders can live around the Moon Lake in their improvised housing enjoying the beauty of outdoor living. The project can function as a 'Health House' - 'Dharma-Hotel'.
