Parking Garage with Multi Media Theatre, Amsterdam.

The Parking Garage is part of the Arts & Crafts Center project and has brick architecture based on the use of arches like the storehouses along the canals. At its ground-floor level a multi media theatre has been planned, which is now in use as a health spa.

Floor plan of the multi-media theatre at the ground-floor level of the parking garage.

The ground floor level is not only used as a multi-media theatre called the 'Amsterdam Experience', but also has a garbage compression installation for the hotel and elevators for people and cars. Against the machine room of the car elevator a waterfall is placed of 12 meter long and with a water drop of 6 meter.
The architecture of the parking garage is typical for brickwork and build with one-stone (21 cm) thick walls with arched half circles, its reverse and full circle openings. All of it is supported by a concrete structure. Where the concrete is exposed in the down part of the second floor, it is rounded, like the columns. In all the openings of the garage large milk-white light balls are placed.

Waterfall

The 3rd floor of the hotel rooms above the Arts & Crafts Center is connected through a bridge with the parking garage. The connecting passage with roof light is made into a gallery with arches that rest on columns behind which a waterfall has been realized. The corridor enters the staircase of the main Sonesta hotel. The waterfall is placed against the wall of the car elevator. Inside the last arch of the gallery the round transparent roof of the crossover bridge fits in. Below the bridge is the entrance of the multi-screen theatre, now health spa.
The waterfall was an appeasing factor in the public meeting around the planning of the parking garage. As the newspaper Parool reported: "Particular restful, absorbing carbon monoxide and out- doing the car noise", says designer Wiersma ... The waterfall falls into a gutter and the water is pumped up again. Along the gutter plant boxes will be placed, where one can sit and relax. In New York many waterfalls are made in connection with parking garages, according to Wiersma."
A year later the same Parool newspaper mentions the waterfall in an article with the headline: "Revolutionary building plans".
