Some research was done on how to improve the quality of the house. As a result the garden room on the deck was remodeled into a more livable space and after realization was used as a sleeping accommodation. The garden room also housed a collection of aloes. The temperature in the day became very high and the nights could become so cold as to damage the aloes. As part of the proposal earth material was to be used for stabilizing the room temperature and earth mixed with straw as insulation for the plant life. To begin with the supporting columns were reinforced to bear the extra weight and improve the stability of the deck. Also the floor was improved with an insulation layer and covered with plywood, eventually to be finished with a decorative coat of paint with mixed in earth colors. On the floor walls with adobe bricks were formed as borders for the plant areas and laid out in curved lines. The unfired bricks were laid with earth mortar reinforced with chopped straw and plastered with the same mixture. This was realized as a project through a workshop and additional material was produced as a light-straw-clay mixture to fill in the spaces around the pots of the aloes and create the whole as a landscaped garden. A raised platform covered with reed mats completed the layout of the space. Additional an electric system was installed with halogen light on a fixture of brass pipes that follow the curves of the adobe brick walls. And a water container was placed on the deck for watering the plants and water pumps installed to collect and distribute the rainwater. |
