The Magic Garden in front of the Twin 21 Towers in Osaka Japan is one of the mega art projects undertaken by the Eric Staller Studio. In this project the artist couple Eric Staller and Deborah Schmidt invited a number of artists/friends to realize its completion within 4 month.
Enno Wiersma was invited to be on the team as the architect, city builder and make a Future City Model, which is still, as part of the permanent exhibit, on view in Osaka
.

The Future City Model is one of the 16 domes that make up the Magic Garden. We made the plans for the structure of clear acrylic after the ideas of the artist couple. This design then was calculated by the structural engineer Tim Mills (leaning on the model -see picture to the left) for sustainability in the Japanese climate with heat changes and earth quakes. He was also responsible for the construction of the protecting dome and its conditioning.

The various parts of the structure were cut with a computerized laser machine and build up in the studio in New York that was rented for that purpose. The prefabricated elements of the city could then be assembled over a short period of time and buildup in its deep pit, which would be ultimately placed in Japanese soil.

The artists Deborah Schmidt and Eric Staller who were also responsible for the 16 different project of the Garden mostly did the detailed finishing of the various layers.

Enno & Eric

Enno and Eric work side by side in the NY studio.

Eventually the model was put into a crate and shipped to Japan. After arrival by plane the crate with the model made a drop and proved earth quake resistant.

The model is mostly meant to be a conceptual proposal, but its physical realization to scale proves to work as a construction for meta-buildings to support a compact city.
